IMPORTΛNT INFORMΛTION

Resin & Render Accuracy

The resin parts shown in renders are only approximations. Owing to the production process and nature of resin casting, the swirls, depth and colour distribution will vary between each piece. For a more accurate representation, please refer to the example photos. It should also be noted that individual screens or monitors and colour settings will show varying colours irrespective of the stock image.

Should there be a large enough volume of resin parts produced, we will try our best to match them across your keyboard so that everything looks cohesive and consistent.

USA Tariff & Country of Origin Information

The import duty/tariff landscape in the USA is constantly changing. The current truce between the US and China may or may not last and the decision of the US Supreme Court on the legality of some of the tariffs is now pending. Moreover, as the time between placing an order and actually making a payment for any applicable duty or tariff will be months, the tariff regime could easily have changed once again.

The following information is not definitive or authoritative but is our best interpretation of the current situation, from our perspective as a UK designer and manufacturer of computer keyboards.

First and foremost, any tariff is based on the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS) along with its Genera Rules of Interpretation to assign a 10 digit HTSUS code. There are rules for products with multiple components, products that are a 'set' and also for products that are a 'kit'. There are also country of origin rules. On top of this there are country specific, across the board tariffs, as well as specific product tariffs with aluminium or steel components, tariffs on autos and auto parts etc. It is complex and open to interpretation and, ultimately, is assigned by US Customs and Border Protection.

However, there are underlying principles that can provide a good level of confidence. There is a specific HTS code for computer keyboards - 8471.60.2000. A complete keyboard (apart from customer added switches/keycaps etc), fully or partially assembled is still classified as a keyboard. Even if it could be considered a kit (completely unassembled) or a set (keyboard and a separate PCB), its essential character remains a computer keyboard. Under the HTS system, a keyboard is generally tariff free.

However, for the USA now, it is the country of origin rules that really is the single most significant factor. Currently, a computer keyboard manufactured in China will generally attract around a 20% tariff on its landed value (updated following adjustments agreed during the most recent negotiation between China and the US, effective from 10th November 2025). However, different estimating tools are currently indicating varied results from 20% through to 35% so it's not at all clear. These tariffs will be/are probably being absorbed by the manufacturer, importer and supplier currently with some (or all) passed on to the US consumer. If the tariff regime continues in this manner or escalates further it is reasonable to assume that more will be passed on to the consumer in time, increasing the final product cost.

For a non-China based manufacturer, the country reciprocal tariffs are likely to apply. In the case of the UK, this is set generally at 10% if/until a free trade agreement (currently being negotiated) comes into effect. However, for a product to be classified with a UK country of origin, it has to have been sufficiently worked or processed in the UK to meet the specific rules. For goods that incorporate non-originating materials (some keyboard components manufactured in China for instance), origin is determined in two ways:

  1. A product will meet the rule if the value of non-originating materials does not exceed a certain percentage of the final product's ex-works price (generally no more than 60%).
  2. The product's commodity code changes after the manufacturing process take place in the UK. i.e. the final product code is different from the individual component codes.

This essentially is a test of 'substantial transformation'.  For Fragment, the addition of bespoke resin and transformed wooden components should largely meet this test which, together with all of the other value adding UK components, provides some confidence that the UK origin threshold will be met.

The ordering of additional spare parts as part of the main order of the keyboard should not alter the fact that the product is still designated a computer keyboard and with sufficient UK based 'transformation', resin/wood additions etc, should retain the UK 10% tariff.

An order without wood/resin parts i.e. a base unit with brass is unlikely to meet the substantial transformation or UK added value test, therefore requiring a China origin designation with the additional tariff level that implies.

In summary, to have a higher level of confidence for a UK origin designation and therefore the lower tariff level, the keyboard needs to include wood/resin components, the more the better.

In addition, subsequent orders placed after the main keyboard order has been shipped, if for China origin parts (PCBs, plates particularly), will likely attract a significantly higher tariff together with the extra shipping costs. It would be more cost effective overall to include everything in the first, main order.

We have worked up a few examples of Fragment configurations and the possible effect of the current estimated tariffs (see below).

Customs & Declaration Policy

We will not underdeclare the value or misrepresent product origin under any circumstances. All customs paperwork will accurately reflect the true value and components of your order.

Quality Standards & Material Variation

Because FRΛGMENT combines machined parts with handmade and hand-finished components, the criteria for what is considered a defect varies.

For machined components (Aluminium, Brass and Plate Materials), the quality standards are defined as follows:

  • A-Stock: All external surfaces should be free from visible flaws and as close to flawless as possible. Small internal imperfections, not visible once assembled, are acceptable.
  • B-Stock: External faces may show minor cosmetic flaws (tiny blemishes, light polish marks, or slight finish inconsistencies) but still meet our functional and aesthetic standards.

For handmade elements (wood, resin, etc.), the standard cannot be identical to fully machine-perfect finishes:

  • Wood will display natural grain variation, knots or other inherent features.
  • Resin parts may have minor hand-polished marks and will remain free from significant colour/ink drop-through reaching the surface.
  • Both wood and resin are natural/handcrafted materials. Each piece will therefore be unique. Variations in grain, tone, colour, resin swirls or finish are normal and part of the individuality of the product - not defects.

Please refer to [This Page] for photo examples of what is considered a flaw in resin parts and what qualifies as A-Stock, B-Stock or failure.

Manufacturing & Logistics

Production for FRΛGMENT is distributed across multiple facilities to balance quality, cost and reliability.

Case Components:

  • The aluminum, brass and plate parts are produced by two factories in China, both experienced in precision CNC work for custom keyboards.

Wooden Components:

  • Machined by a specialist wood factory in China, these pieces are then hand-finished in the UK to ensure surface consistency and proper fit before assembly.

Resin Components:

  • All resin accents are hand-cast and polished in the UK.

Final Assembly & QC:

  • All units are quality checked, assembled and packed in the UK before shipping.
  • Splitting production across multiple factories enables the complex FRΛGMENT design to be produced efficiently while reducing risk and shortening lead times.

Production Plan:

  • As soon as the MOQ is reached, production samples will be ordered and thoroughly inspected in person before full manufacturing begins. A range of colour chips for each case finish will be produced and the final shades will be approved in person during the first factory visit.
  • I will personally visit each facility throughout production to oversee quality, approve key stages and sign off on the final batch before shipment to the UK.
  • We are also exploring secure payment routes - such as Alibaba’s Trade Assurance or a bank Letter of Credit - to ensure protection for all orders.

Timeline & Updates:

  • All dates are estimates. While we work hard to stay on schedule, delays can occur due to manufacturing, shipping or customs. Updates will be posted if anything changes.

MOUNTING SYSTEMS

Plateless O-Ring

FRΛGMENT utilizes an improved version of the gummy O-ring system used in the QUΛNTUM60, addressing every aspect for improved performance. Previously, metal standoffs were used to hold the O-ring in place, but if pressed hard on the assembly, they could contact the bottom case, potentially causing metallic sounds or harsh points.

The new design features a fully custom semi-circular O-ring with molded-in standoffs that clip into the corners of the PCB. The half-moon shaped O-ring maintains more contact with the bottom of the PCB and allows for a reduced assembly height. The O-ring then rests on gasket standoffs to further isolate the PCB.

The PCB assembly is aligned by gaskets in the bottom case and molded silicone alignment pins in the top case. This prevents both horizontal and upward movement of the PCB, while the silicone provides sound dampening without affecting the isolation of the PCB assembly from the metal case. Additionally, the latest revision maintains compatibility with both plate and plateless configurations while significantly simplifying assembly.

Top Mount

For those who prefer a firmer, more traditional typing experience, FRΛGMENT also supports a top-mount configuration. However, since the plate is isolated and not touching the top case in its resting position, plate contacts are required to bridge the gap.

INTERNAL SCREWS

FRΛGMENT utilizes seven magnetic screws positioned above the plate at a 45° angle. Unlike conventional hidden screw designs, which can be difficult to reach internally, this system keeps everything easily accessible from above, making assembly and disassembly quicker and easier. There are screws from both above and below due to the complexity, material choices, and number of parts. Placing the final assembly screws on the underside would make assembly and disassembly far more tedious. Instead, aesthetic brass screws secure the backplate on the underside, while easily accessible screws from above improve the overall user experience.

PROTOTYPE v0.1.5

This first prototype serves as a proof of concept and a foundation for refining the second version. The prototype naming system follows this format: the first number represents the production run (0 for pre-production), the second indicates the specific prototype ordered (1 for first prototype, 2 for second) and the third tracks the number of major design iterations before the prototype was ordered.

The top case colour in this prototype is the final Frost colourway, however, the bottom case is a warmer version of the Slate colour that will not be offered.

The resin accents in this prototype were made using an older method, which has since been improved to enhance depth and ensure greater consistency for larger production runs. Personally, I prefer the updated resin pieces. Images of these revisions will be added to the configurator as they become available. The resin in this prototype also isn’t a perfect match to the case colours, but this will be refined as production approaches

This prototype had a few issues which have been addressed for prototype v0.2.4:

  • The design of the front accent caused the front of the bottom case to bow, leading to misalignment and an inconsistent sound profile.
  • The tension from the O-Ring would cause the PCB to bow, affecting the alignment with the top case.
  • The backplate cutout in the bottom case introduced an unpredictable sound profile, influenced by how tightly it was screwed in place, machining tolerance variations and other factors that cannot be controlled.

PROTOTYPE v0.2.3

Prototype v0.2.3 is near-final, with only minor refinements remaining. The case colours Moss and Dune are confirmed. The resin pattern and design are final, though colour matching and variation control are still being improved.

This version tested a high-gloss resin-coated finish for the wooden components, but due to the difficulty and high failure rate of the process, production units will instead feature a matte wood finish. The internal mounting system is also being slightly revised, along with small changes to reduce manufacturing costs. The brass finish will be updated as the current clear coat wears too quickly.

ΛDDITIONΛL DETΛILS

How many units will be available?

There is no fixed maximum number of units, but there is an approximate internal limit on the number of resin components we can produce
